ILGLC Hosts “Grazing Infrastructure” Pasture Walk
On June 28, the Illinois Grazing Lands Coalition (ILGLC) hosted a free Pasture Walk in Beardstown at the farm of grazier Leo Arnold. This event brought together 24 livestock producers from the region for a hands-on learning opportunity focused on the practical aspects of rotational grazing infrastructure.
The group spent the afternoon walking through Arnold’s pastures, discussing the layout and design of permanent fencing, the use of solar chargers, and water line systems that allow for greater flexibility with quick hookups. A major topic of interest was how grazing hillsides separately from flat ground can lead to more consistent forage utilization and better overall pasture health.
Attendees also had the chance to see the effects of bale grazing on soil and forage regeneration, and Leo shared insights on how to set up solar-powered systems effectively including how to properly ground a fence charger (a key detail for reliable performance).
This event is part of ILGLC’s ongoing effort to create peer-to-peer learning spaces where producers can learn directly from one another in a practical, on-farm setting. A special thanks to Leo Arnold for his generosity in hosting and sharing his experience.
