Grazing School Highlights Producer Success & Practical Learning
On September 26–27, the Illinois Grazing Lands Coalition (ILGLC) hosted its second Grazing School of the year at Hottes Angus Farm in Waltonville, Illinois. The event brought together producers from across the region for two days of hands-on learning focused on grazing practices that improve soil health, herd performance, and long-term farm profitability.
The host farmers, Perry and Cary Hottes, exemplify what ILGLC aims to support and cultivate in graziers across the state. After previously attending an ILGLC Grazing School in Bluford, Perry returned home and began implementing significant changes to better align his operation with regenerative grazing principles. The Hottes family made a strategic decision to reduce their herd size by nearly half, placing greater emphasis on herd quality, soil health, and stockpile grazing. They have since incorporated annual forages into their rotation and continued to expand their conservation efforts.
Their commitment to continuous improvement is further demonstrated through their participation in seven EQIP and CSP contracts over the last 19 years, underscoring the long-term value and impact that these programs can have on grazing operations.
Highlights
Over the two-day school, attendees took part in a mix of classroom learning and in-field demonstrations covering timely and practical topics, including:
✔️ Adaptable marketing plans to strengthen business resilience
✔️ Maximizing EQIP programs to support infrastructure and conservation goals
✔️ Genetic improvements for grazing-focused herds, optimizing cattle performance on forage
Instruction was provided by the Hottes family, Logan Karcher (ILGLC Director of Producer Programs), and representatives from University of Illinois Extension, Illinois NRCS, Progressive Agronomy Consulting, and Hanson Ag. As always, the blend of technical expertise and peer-to-peer insights helped ensure attendees left with strategies they can apply immediately in their own operations.
Grazing Schools reflect ILGLC’s commitment to providing accessible, practical educational opportunities that empower Illinois graziers to improve profitability, land stewardship, and livestock performance. We extend our gratitude to Perry and Cary Hottes for their hospitality and to all attendees who contributed to a successful event!
